Square Glossary of terms

Use this to familiarize yourself with the hardware and terminology for Square Point of Sale


  • Square Point of Sale App can be identified by the white icon "Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 3.50.55 PM". It is the only option available for smart phones. 
  • Square for Restaurants App is represented by a red icon "Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 3.51.04 PM". This is the recommended app to use when possible. It is only available on Tablets and Square Terminals. 
  • Employee Code - A four-digit code created in Square used by employees to log in to devices for work purposes.
  • Device Code - a unique code is required for logging into each "device + location". Each "device + location" will have its own specific Device Code. A single Device can have multiple Device Codes
  • Device - Any device that links to Square, such as a cell phone, terminal, tablet, card reader, or mag stripe reader.
    • Cell Phone -  Any smart phone is compatible with Square, but smart phones are only compatible with the Square Point of Sale App (the white icon).
    • Tablet - To connect to the internet, tablets must be linked through public WiFi, a mobile service provider (such as Verizon or ATT), or a mobile hotspot. It's important to note that iPads do not support tap to pay functionality, although some Android tablets do offer this feature.
    • Terminal - Square hardware with a screen for processing transactions. This device can be used on its own or connected to a cell phone or tablet to serve as the customer-facing screen. However, please note that the terminal cannot connect to the internet independently, so you will need access to public WiFi,  a mobile service provider (such as Verizon or ATT), or a mobile hotspot.
    • Card Reader - The white square device with four lights at the top is capable of accepting chip payments and tap payments.
    • Mag Stripe Reader - The Mag Stripe Reader can be connected to a phone and is specifically designed for swipe transactions. This device serves as a reliable backup option as it does not require a battery. However, it is important to note that some cards may no longer have functional mag stripes.
  • Mobile Hotspot - A mobile hotspot is a type of internet connection that can be accessed through a tablet, cell phone, or a dedicated mobile hotspot device.
  • Location - This refers to the specific location where revenues should be linked based on the event's zip code. Every King of Pops Franchisee begins with a minimum of two locations in their Square account: their home territory and a designated location for all sales conducted outside their territories, known as their unowned territory. Ensure that you select the correct Square location for all transactions, including retail events and invoices.

  • Account - Your Square account will house all your activity across all location.

We will create an email alias that you will use for logging into square only -  [your_home_territory]-square@kingofpops.com (for example, brookhaven-square@kingofpops.com).
